What is a Timer?

The role of a Timer involves meticulous work with both the storyboard and the audio track of an animation. They must break down the scenes into individual frames and assign exact durations for each action to occur, a process known as "timing out" the animation. By doing so, Timers collaborate closely with animators and directors to translate the script and storyboard into a dynamic visual narrative that aligns with the creative vision.

Timers must possess a unique blend of technical and creative skills to excel in their position. These include an extraordinary sense of rhythm and timing, attention to detail, and the ability to visualize how scenes will play out before they are fully animated. Familiarity with animation software and a solid understanding of the principles of animation are also critical. Additionally, strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, as Timers must work closely with various members of the animation team to ensure the project's timing is consistent and effective.

While a college degree is not always mandatory to become a Timer, having a background in animation, film studies, or a related field can be incredibly advantageous. Many Timers have a bachelor's degree in these areas or have completed specialized courses that have equipped them with a strong foundational understanding of the animation process. However, practical experience, a keen sense of timing, and a strong portfolio can sometimes outweigh formal education in this role.
