What is a Stylist?

The role of a Stylist extends beyond merely choosing outfits. They must collaborate closely with the Costume Designer, Director, and sometimes the actors themselves to understand a character's background, personality, and the overall style of the production. Stylists are tasked with researching fashion trends, sourcing garments, coordinating fittings, and ensuring continuity in the characters' looks throughout the filming process. Their attention to detail helps maintain the authenticity and coherence of the visual narrative.

A successful Stylist must possess a keen eye for detail, a creative flair, and a deep understanding of fashion and costume history. They should have strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with various departments and talent. Time management and organizational skills are essential, as Stylists often work within tight deadlines and must juggle multiple looks and changes. Additionally, problem-solving abilities and adaptability are key, as unexpected challenges may arise that require quick and innovative solutions.

While a college degree is not strictly mandatory for a Stylist, a background in fashion design, costume design, or a related field can be incredibly beneficial. Many Stylists have degrees from art schools or fashion institutes, which provide them with a strong foundation in design principles, textiles, and fashion history. However, practical experience, internships, and a robust portfolio often hold equal weight. The path to becoming a Stylist can also stem from hands-on experience in the fashion industry or in wardrobe departments.
