Iron Man 3 Production History

After Walt Disney Studios acquired worldwide distribution rights for $115 million in October 2010, a May 3, 2013 release date was set. Jon Favreau, who directed the first two Iron Man films, declined to return for the third installment. Robert Downey Jr. personally approached Shane Black, who entered final negotiations in February 2011. Drew Pearce joined as co-writer the following month. Black brought a thriller sensibility to the project, stating the film would not be "two men in iron suits fighting each other" but rather a "Tom Clancy thriller" with real-world antagonists. The script drew heavily from Warren Ellis's Extremis comic arc from 2005 to 2006.

Ben Kingsley entered negotiations in April 2012, followed by Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian and Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen in May. Principal photography ran from May 23 to December 17, 2012, primarily at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, with additional filming in Cary, Oak Island, Rose Hill, Dania Beach, Miami, and Beijing under the working title Caged Heat.

Robert Downey Jr. suffered an ankle injury on August 15, 2012, temporarily halting production until August 24. Visual effects required over 2,000 shots across 17 studios. Reshoots took place in January 2013, including scenes at the TCL Chinese Theatre. The post-production timeline was compressed, with VFX crews working 14 to 18 hours daily, seven days a week to meet the release deadline.

Critical Reception

Iron Man 3 earned a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 331 reviews, with the consensus praising its "charismatic lead" and "impressive action sequences." On Metacritic, the film scored 62 out of 100 from 44 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore, matching both predecessors.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter noted the film "benefits immeasurably from the irreverent quicksilver humor" of Black's direction. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times credited Black with "changing this billion-dollar-plus franchise's tone for the better" while maintaining Tony Stark's character. Psychology Today highlighted the accurate portrayal of PTSD as a notable narrative choice.

Stephen Whitty of the Star-Ledger found the film "empty," lacking the emotional depth of the first installment. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune critiqued the child sidekick subplot as "authorial desperation" and called the film "remote and vaguely secondhand." The Mandarin twist, which revealed Ben Kingsley's character as an actor rather than the real villain, proved divisive among both critics and fans.
