What Is the Budget of Iron Man?

Iron Man (2008), directed by Jon Favreau, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures, had a production budget of $140,000,000. That is the figure Deadline reported on the film's opening weekend, describing it as a production self-financed by Marvel, and the figure Box Office Mojo lists. Reuters, writing the same weekend, put the cost at about $150,000,000 to make and another $75,000,000 to market, and that higher number is the one Wikipedia currently cites. The Numbers lists $186,000,000. Saturation uses $140,000,000, which Deadline reported as the cost the film came in at, and treats $140,000,000 to $150,000,000 as the range reported at release.

The budget matters less for its size than for who paid it. Iron Man was the first film Marvel Studios financed itself, drawing on a $525,000,000 film facility the company arranged in 2005, with the film rights to characters including Captain America and The Avengers pledged as collateral. Paramount distributed the film for a fee, but the production risk sat with Marvel. Six weeks later Marvel released The Incredible Hulk (2008), funded the same way, and the two were the first films Marvel produced itself.

Key Budget Allocation Categories

Marvel has never published a line-item budget for Iron Man, but the production record shows where the money went.

• Visual Effects: Industrial Light & Magic created the bulk of the effects, with The Orphanage and The Embassy contributing, including a digital version of the Mark I armor. The work earned Academy Award and BAFTA nominations, and reworking the final battle in post-production was estimated to add $6,000,000.
• Practical Armor and Animatronics: Stan Winston Studios built metal and rubber versions of the suits, including a single 90-pound Mark I and a 10-foot, 800-pound animatronic Iron Monger that needed five operators for its arm alone.
• Stages and Sets: Production was based at the former Hughes Company soundstages in Playa Vista, Los Angeles, California, where the crew built the interior of Stark's home and a cave set roughly 150 to 200 yards long for the Afghanistan captivity scenes.
• Cast: Robert Downey Jr. was paid $500,000 for the title role, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a modest fee for the lead of a summer tentpole. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard led the supporting cast.
• Location Shooting: Afghanistan exteriors were shot at Lone Pine and the Olancha Sand Dunes, and three days at Edwards Air Force Base used around 150 service members as extras, with Department of Defense support that included F-22 Raptors and two HH-60 helicopters.

How Does Iron Man's Budget Compare to Similar Films?

At $140,000,000, Iron Man sat in the middle of the superhero market of its era. Figures below are Box Office Mojo's, across all releases.

• Spider-Man (2002): Budget $139,000,000 | Worldwide $810,925,307. Almost exactly the same budget, and the only film that was not a sequel to open bigger than Iron Man at the time; it shows the ceiling for an origin story built around a better-known hero.
• Batman Begins (2005): Budget $150,000,000 | Worldwide $375,591,291. A grounded origin story that Favreau cited as a reference point. Iron Man cost $10,000,000 less and grossed 56% more worldwide.
• Hancock (2008): Budget $150,000,000 | Worldwide $629,443,428. An original superhero film from the same summer that grossed slightly more, but earned 64% of its total overseas, where Iron Man took most of its money at home.
• The Dark Knight (2008): Budget $185,000,000 | Worldwide $1,008,297,779. The summer's dominant superhero film cost $45,000,000 more and grossed $422,501,532 more, but it was a sequel to Batman Begins rather than a first outing.

Iron Man Box Office Performance

Iron Man opened in 29 international markets on April 30, 2008, and in the United States and Canada on May 2, where it took $98,618,668 from 4,105 theaters in its opening weekend. That was the second-biggest opening at the time for a film that was not a sequel, behind Spider-Man, and on June 19 it became the first film of 2008 to pass $300,000,000 domestically. Including a 2020 re-release that added $430,000, it has grossed $319,034,126 in the United States and Canada and $266,762,121 internationally, for $585,796,247 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Reuters reported about $75,000,000 in marketing costs at release, which is the prints and advertising estimate used below. Under Marvel's distribution deal, Paramount recouped its distribution costs, including prints and advertising, from the film's receipts before Marvel took its share.

Iron Man earned more at home than abroad: 54.5% of its gross came from the United States and Canada, and it finished as the eighth-highest grossing film of 2008. The return showed up in Marvel's own accounts. In February 2009 the company repaid $109,000,000 of its film facility debt using net collections from Iron Man, according to its annual report, and The Numbers estimates domestic DVD and Blu-ray sales at a further $198,746,194.

At 172%, "Iron Man" earned roughly $2.72 for every $1 invested.

Iron Man Production History

An Iron Man film spent fifteen years in development elsewhere before Marvel made it. Universal bought the rights in 1990, 20th Century Fox acquired them by 1996, and New Line Cinema took over in 1999. Tom Cruise expressed interest in producing and starring, Quentin Tarantino was approached to write and direct, and Nick Cassavetes was attached in 2004 before the deal fell through and the rights returned to Marvel. In November 2005 Marvel Studios announced Iron Man as its first independent feature, with Paramount as distributor. Associate producer Jeremy Latcham later said about 30 writers passed on the project.

Jon Favreau was hired to direct in April 2006. He moved Tony Stark's origin from Vietnam to Afghanistan to avoid making a period piece, and combined scripts from two writing teams, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. Favreau pushed for Robert Downey Jr. over resistance from Marvel executives, who came around after Downey recorded an audition tape and news of his casting talks drew a positive reaction; he was cast in September 2006. Terrence Howard was the first actor cast, Gwyneth Paltrow joined in January 2007, and Jeff Bridges was cast as Obadiah Stane, who replaced the Mandarin as the villain.

Filming ran from March 12 to June 25, 2007, starting with Stark's captivity scenes on the cave set and moving to Lone Pine, the Olancha Sand Dunes, Edwards Air Force Base and Point Dume in Malibu, before wrapping at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. The script was unfinished when shooting began, so much of the dialogue was improvised, and Downey came up with the film's final line, "I am Iron Man." Jeff Bridges compared the process to a very expensive student film.

In post-production, editor Dan Lebental's first cut showed that the final act was not working. Marvel rehired Marcum and Holloway, who delivered a new ending on November 4, 2007, the day before the Writers Guild strike began, and Industrial Light & Magic rebuilt the climax largely from footage already shot. A post-credits scene with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, filmed with a skeleton crew to keep it secret, set up The Avengers (2012). Iron Man premiered in Sydney on April 14, 2008, and was followed by Iron Man 2 in 2010 and Iron Man 3 (2013).

Iron Man was recognized mainly for its visual effects, sound and Robert Downey Jr.'s performance.

Critical Reception

Reviews were strongly positive. Iron Man holds 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from 278 critics, with an average rating of 7.9/10, and a Metacritic score of 79 out of 100 from 38 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it an A. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus reads: "Powered by Robert Downey Jr.'s vibrant charm, Iron Man turbo-charges the superhero genre with a deft intelligence and infectious sense of fun."

Roger Ebert gave the film four out of four stars, writing that "it's Robert Downey Jr. who powers the lift-off separating this from most other superhero movies." Todd McCarthy of Variety called it an "expansively entertaining special effects extravaganza," and A. O. Scott of The New York Times called it "an unusually good superhero picture." Among the few negative reviews, David Denby of The New Yorker found "a slightly depressed, going-through-the-motions feel to the entire show." Critics broadly agreed that Downey's performance and Favreau's balance of character and spectacle set the film apart.
