Synopsis
Duke Leto Atreides accepts the Emperor's order to take over the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the valuable spice melange, and moves his family there from their home world, Caladan. The handover is a trap set by the Emperor and House Harkonnen, and after their attack, Leto's son Paul and his mother Jessica escape into the deep desert, where they seek refuge with the Fremen.
What Is the Budget of Dune (2021)?
Dune (2021), Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the first half of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, had a production budget of $165,000,000. It was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and it is a different film from David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of the same book. The $165,000,000 figure is the one Box Office Mojo lists and the one Deadline reported in December 2020, when it described the film's net budget as roughly that amount. A net budget is the cost after production incentives such as tax rebates, so the gross amount spent was higher, but neither Legendary nor Warner Bros. has published it.
Deadline also reported who paid. Legendary and its financing partners put up about 75% of the budget and Warner Bros. covered the rest, which is why the release plan turned into a dispute. In December 2020 Warner Bros. announced that its whole 2021 slate, Dune included, would stream on HBO Max the same day it opened in theaters. Legendary, which carried most of the cost, challenged the decision, and Villeneuve criticized it in a column for Variety. The $165,000,000 paid for the first film only: Warner Bros. agreed a two-film plan, but production contracts covered this film alone, and the sequel depended on how it performed.
Key Budget Allocation Categories
Legendary and Warner Bros. have not released a line-item budget, but the production record shows where the money went. Villeneuve and production designer Patrice Vermette built as much as possible for real, with minimal set extensions and no green screens.
- Visual Effects: The film has about 1,700 visual effects shots. DNEG delivered 1,200 of them across more than 30 scenes, with Wylie Co. and Rodeo FX also contributing. Supervisor Paul Lambert replaced green screens with sand-colored "sandscreens" so the desert light matched, and the team spent more than a year working out how the computer-generated sandworms should move.
- Stages and Practical Sets: Interiors for all three planets were built on the soundstages and backlots of Origo Film Studios in Budapest, Hungary, where the crew also staged the practical explosions of the Arrakeen invasion. About 18 tons of sand and dust were used on set.
- Full-Size Ornithopters: London propmakers built two working ornithopter models, 48 and 75 feet long, with opening doors and cockpits. The models weighed more than 11 tons and had to be transported to the filming locations in an Antonov cargo plane, then lifted by cranes for flying shots.
- Desert and Coastal Locations: Wadi Rum in Jordan doubled for Arrakis, as did the Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi, where the unit shot for 11 days with local crews of more than 100 people. Heat-shelter scenes were filmed in the Rub' al Khali desert, and Stadlandet in Norway stood in for the Atreides home world, Caladan.
- Costumes and Stillsuits: Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan designed more than 1,000 looks. A stillsuit workshop set up at Origo produced over 150 individual suit pieces, and more than 250 stillsuits were used in Jordan.
- Large-Format Photography: Greig Fraser shot for IMAX on IMAX-certified Arri Alexa LF and Alexa Mini LF cameras with Panavision large-format lenses, then had the footage printed to 35mm film and scanned back to 4K for a more film-like texture.
How Does Dune's Budget Compare to Similar Films?
At $165,000,000, Dune was priced like the large science fiction films made before the pandemic, but it was released into a 2021 market that was still recovering from the pandemic, and on HBO Max at the same time. Worldwide figures below come from Box Office Mojo.
- Blade Runner 2049 (2017): Budget $150,000,000 | Worldwide $287,277,046. Villeneuve's previous science fiction film had an exclusive theatrical run and cost $15,000,000 less. Dune grossed $123,391,454 more, even with streaming competing for its domestic audience.
- Godzilla vs. Kong (2021): Budget $155,000,000 to $200,000,000 (reported range) | Worldwide $470,116,094. The other Legendary production that Warner Bros. put on HBO Max on opening day in 2021. It opened lower in the United States, at $31,625,971, but grossed $59,447,594 more worldwide on the strength of $369,200,000 overseas.
- The Matrix Resurrections (2021): Budget $190,000,000 | Worldwide $157,386,805. Another Warner Bros. science fiction release that streamed on HBO Max from its first day. It cost $25,000,000 more than Dune and grossed $253,281,695 less, so the same release plan produced very different results.
- Interstellar (2014): Budget $165,000,000 | Worldwide $746,049,306. An original science fiction epic with exactly the same budget, released only in theaters in 2014. It grossed about 1.8 times as much as Dune.
- Dune: Part Two (2024): Budget $190,000,000 | Worldwide $714,844,358. The sequel cost 15% more, played only in theaters and grossed 74% more worldwide. Its domestic total of $282,144,358 was about 2.6 times the first film's.
Dune (2021) Box Office Performance
Dune opened outside North America first, starting on September 15, 2021 in France, Germany, Russia, Spain and other markets, more than a month before its United States release. In China it opened to about $21,600,000, according to Warner Bros. estimates. On October 22, 2021 it opened in 4,125 theaters in the United States and Canada and, the same day, on HBO Max, where subscribers could stream it for one month at no extra cost. It still took $41,011,174 in its opening weekend, including about $5,100,000 from Thursday previews. That was the best opening for any Warner Bros. film of the pandemic era, ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong, and the biggest of Villeneuve's career. IMAX screens alone delivered about $9,000,000 from 404 screens, 22.5% of the weekend, and premium formats including IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 3D accounted for about half of the total, according to Deadline.
The film passed $100,000,000 in the United States and Canada on November 25, 2021. Box Office Mojo counts $402,127,830 from the original release and $8,540,670 more from later screenings, mostly IMAX and international re-releases in February 2024 ahead of Dune: Part Two. Across all releases it has grossed $108,897,830 in the United States and Canada and $301,770,188 internationally, for $410,668,500 worldwide. Its largest markets outside North America included China, France and the United Kingdom.
Box Office Breakdown

Dune
Because theaters keep a share of every ticket, the studios' actual theatrical return was smaller than the gross suggests. Before the United States release, Vulture estimated that Dune would need between $350,000,000 and $400,000,000 worldwide to break even, a range its final total cleared, while Forbes put the threshold nearer $500,000,000. Only 26.5% of the gross came from the United States and Canada. The same-day streaming release applied only in the United States, and Canada, which had no HBO Max, delivered an unusually high 11% of early domestic ticket sales, according to Deadline. Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein estimated that the film would have opened with about 20% more at the box office without the simultaneous streaming release, according to the Associated Press. On the streaming side, Samba TV estimated that 1.9 million US households watched on HBO Max in the first three days and 3.9 million in the first 30. Legendary and Warner Bros. greenlit the sequel on October 26, 2021, four days after the domestic opening, and planned it as a theater-only release.
Neither studio has disclosed marketing spend. Deadline estimated combined production and distribution costs at about $300,000,000 but did not break out marketing, so P&A and the return are not calculated here.
Dune (2021) Production History
Frank Herbert's novel had a long record of failed or troubled adaptations. Alejandro Jodorowsky held the rights in the 1970s for a fourteen-hour version that never found the money. David Lynch's 1984 film, produced by Raffaella De Laurentiis, was meant to run three hours, was cut to 137 minutes and was later disowned by Lynch. Producer Richard P. Rubinstein acquired the rights in 1996 and made a Sci Fi Channel miniseries in 2000, and Paramount developed a feature with Peter Berg and then Pierre Morel before cancelling it in March 2011. Legendary obtained the film and television rights in November 2016.
Villeneuve, who said adapting the book had been a long-held dream, was in talks by December 2016, was confirmed as director in February 2017, and chose to finish Arrival (2016) and Blade Runner 2049 first. In March 2018 he said the novel was too large for one film and secured a two-film deal with Warner Bros. Eric Roth was hired in April 2018 and wrote a 50-page treatment, Villeneuve finished a first draft by May, and Jon Spaihts joined as co-writer that September. Villeneuve chose not to draw on Lynch's film or on Jodorowsky's concepts. Timothée Chalamet entered final negotiations to play Paul Atreides in July 2018. Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista and Charlotte Rampling joined in January 2019, followed by Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa and David Dastmalchian in February. Greig Fraser replaced Roger Deakins as cinematographer in December 2018, and at Spaihts's suggestion the ecologist Liet Kynes became a woman, played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster.
Principal photography began on March 18, 2019 at Origo Film Studios in Budapest and moved to Wadi Rum, the Liwa Oasis and the Rub' al Khali for the desert, and to Stadlandet for Caladan. The ornithopter interiors were shot on hilltops outside Budapest, where a 25-foot, 360-degree sand-colored ramp around a gimbal let Fraser work in natural sunlight. Filming wrapped on July 26, 2019, and additional scenes were shot in Budapest by August 2020. Hans Zimmer, who turned down Christopher Nolan's request to score Tenet (2020), citing his love of the novel, recorded 30 bagpipe players found around Edinburgh for the House Atreides theme.
The release moved several times. Dune was first dated November 20, 2020, then December 18, 2020, then pushed to October 1, 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally to October 22, 2021 to avoid No Time to Die (2021). It premiered on September 3, 2021 at the Venice International Film Festival and had an IMAX screening at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11. After two date changes Dune: Part Two opened on March 1, 2024, and a third film, Dune: Part Three, adapts Dune Messiah.

Critical Reception
Reviews were positive. Dune holds 83% on Rotten Tomatoes from 512 critics, with an average rating of 7.7/10, and a Metacritic score of 74 out of 100 from 68 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it an A-, and 84% of viewers surveyed by PostTrak were positive, with 66% saying they would definitely recommend it. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus reads: "Dune occasionally struggles with its unwieldy source material, but those issues are largely overshadowed by the scope and ambition of this visually thrilling adaptation."
Xan Brooks of The Guardian called the film "the missing link bridging the multiplex and the arthouse," and Ben Travis of Empire described it as "blockbuster filmmaking in the Christopher Nolan mould," though he felt the "emotional strings" worked less well. Steve Pond of TheWrap called it a "giant mood piece that can be exhilarating in its dark beauty." The main complaint was that the story stops halfway: Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times praised the production and the action but disliked the "abrupt, unsatisfying" ending, and Owen Gleiberman of Variety felt the spectacle of the sandworms and ornithopters pulled attention from the story. Roxana Hadadi of Vulture criticized the film for flattening the novel's cultural and religious complexity and for failing to cast Middle Eastern or North African actors.
