The Electric State Production History
The project was announced in December 2017 when the Russo Brothers acquired adaptation rights to Simon Stalenhag's illustrated novel, a dystopian story set in the late 1990s featuring a teenager and her robot companion traversing an alternate-history American West. Andy Muschietti was initially in negotiations to direct, with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely contracted to write the screenplay. By December 2020, Universal Pictures had secured distribution rights, with the Russo Brothers now attached to direct the film themselves, while Muschietti remained as executive producer.
The distribution landscape shifted in June 2022 when Netflix took over from Universal after the studio decided against a theatrical release. Casting followed quickly: Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt were confirmed in August 2022, with Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Woody Norman, and Giancarlo Esposito joining through the fall. Michelle Yeoh had been cast but was replaced by Ke Huy Quan due to scheduling conflicts. Additional voice actors including Woody Harrelson, Alan Tudyk, Hank Azaria, and Colman Domingo were announced in October 2024.
Principal photography began in October 2022 in Atlanta under the working title "Stormwind." Tragedy struck on November 4, 2022 when a crew member working on the film died in a car crash off-set, temporarily halting production. Filming wrapped in early February 2023, with reshoots conducted from March 20 to April 5, 2024. Alan Silvestri composed the score, marking his third collaboration with the Russo Brothers following Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The film blended large-scale practical sets with extensive visual effects to bring Stalenhag's distinctively melancholic retro-futuristic artwork to life on screen.
