The Electric State Production History

The project was announced in December 2017 when the Russo Brothers acquired adaptation rights to Simon Stalenhag's illustrated novel, a dystopian story set in the late 1990s featuring a teenager and her robot companion traversing an alternate-history American West. Andy Muschietti was initially in negotiations to direct, with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely contracted to write the screenplay. By December 2020, Universal Pictures had secured distribution rights, with the Russo Brothers now attached to direct the film themselves, while Muschietti remained as executive producer.

The distribution landscape shifted in June 2022 when Netflix took over from Universal after the studio decided against a theatrical release.
