What Does An Assistant Director Do
The assistant director (AD) is a key link between the director and crew, ensuring smooth, efficient production across all stages. The 1st AD runs the set, manages the schedule, and enforces safety; the 2nd AD handles logistics, call sheets, and interdepartmental coordination; and the 3rd AD manages extras and on-set organization. ADs are involved in pre-production planning, on-set operations, and post-production coordination. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, and most ADs work their way up through internships, crew roles, and training programs.
