About Tasveer Film Festival

Tasveer was founded in 2002 in Seattle by Rita Meher and Farah Nousheen. The word "Tasveer" translates to "picture" in Hindi and Urdu, and the organisation's founding context was specific: it emerged shortly after September 11, 2001 to counter the harmful stereotypes about South Asians that proliferated in mainstream American media in the period that followed. Two decades on, the festival has grown into a major institution for South Asian cinema in the United States, and the surrounding nonprofit has expanded into year-round programming and filmmaker support.

The Tasveer Film Festival & Market is recognised as the world's only Oscar-qualifying South Asian film festival. That qualification status is the festival's most strategically consequential feature for filmmakers — a qualifying win at Tasveer opens Oscar consideration that no other festival dedicated to South Asian cinema can offer.

When and Where Tasveer Runs

The festival runs annually in Seattle. The 20th edition took place from October 8 to 12, 2025, presenting 109 films from 22 countries — including 43 world premieres. That international reach is unusually broad for a festival anchored in a single regional city, and it reflects how thoroughly Tasveer has become the central platform for new South Asian cinema in North America.

Tasveer also runs the Tasveer Film Arts Center, which reopened the historic Ark Lodge Cinema in Seattle in March 2025. The Arts Center provides a year-round programming venue beyond the festival itself.

Tasveer's Filmmaker Support Programmes

Tasveer's broader infrastructure is part of what distinguishes it from a one-week festival event. The organisation runs filmmaker support programmes that operate independently of the festival schedule:

• Tasveer Film Fund — partnered with Netflix, awarding $35,000 grants to South Asian filmmakers
• Tasveer Producers Lab — launched in 2025 with Amazon MGM Studios
• Tasveer Film Arts Center — year-round programming at the historic Ark Lodge Cinema, reopened March 2025

For South Asian filmmakers planning a career-stage submission strategy, those programmes are at least as significant as the festival itself. The Netflix-partnered fund and the Amazon MGM producers lab are direct studio-level relationships that are difficult to replicate through standard festival circuits.

Recent Recognition

In 2025, Tasveer co-founder Rita Meher and the festival received Seattle's Mayor's Film Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film — local civic recognition that reflects the festival's standing as a cultural institution in Seattle, not only within the South Asian cinema community.

Mission and Curatorial Identity

Tasveer's stated mission is to inspire social change through thought-provoking South Asian films, art, and storytelling. That framing is reflected in the slate: the festival programs work that engages with South Asian identity, history, and politics as living material rather than as marketing category. Films that treat South Asian-ness primarily as backdrop or aesthetic typically have a meaningfully different reception here than work in genuine conversation with the festival's mission.
