Production History

Development began in March 2015 when Paramount tasked Akiva Goldsman with establishing a writers' room to map out the future of the Transformers franchise. By July 2015, Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner signed on as writers. The writing team expanded in November 2015 to include Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Ken Nolan, with additional contributions from Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

Michael Bay had initially decided against directing future installments after Age of Extinction in 2014, but in early January 2016, he reversed course and announced he would return to helm this fifth entry as his final Transformers film. Principal photography commenced on May 25, 2016, starting in Havana, Cuba, then expanding to Phoenix, Arizona, on June 6, and Detroit, Michigan, on June 19 under the working title "E75." International production moved to Europe on August 21, 2016, filming across Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland, and Norway through December 4, 2016.

The production was one of the largest in Michigan film history, with approximately 850 cast and crew and 700 extras recruited from Detroit residents. Paramount spent $80 million on Michigan production in exchange for $21 million in state tax incentives. Cinematographer Jonathan Sela utilized multiple camera formats including IMAX and Panavision across different aspect ratios, a decision that would later draw criticism from reviewers who found the constant format shifts distracting.

Critical Reception

Transformers: The Last Knight received overwhelmingly negative reviews, earning the franchise's worst critical reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 16% approval rating based on 254 reviews, with an average score of 3.5 out of 10. Metacritic assigned a score of 27 out of 100 from 47 critics, indicating generally unfavorable reviews. Audiences were more forgiving, giving the film a B+ CinemaScore grade.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus described it as "cacophonous, thinly plotted, and boasting state-of-the-art special effects" that was "pretty much what you'd expect from the fifth installment of the Transformers franchise." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone awarded zero stars, stating the film makes "the summer's other blockbuster misfires look like masterpieces." Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave one out of five stars, noting it lacked the "wit and fun" of Marvel's competing franchise entries.

A handful of critics found merit in the spectacle. Richard Brody of The New Yorker acknowledged the film's flaws while noting the "wildly imaginative power" of its visuals. Robbie Collin of The Telegraph praised Bay's technical execution as superior to comparable franchise efforts. Nevertheless, the film's critical failure and underwhelming box office performance prompted Paramount to shift the franchise's direction, leading to the prequel Bumblebee the following year.
