Synopsis

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky, declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep. After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.

Production History

Development of Toy Story 4 began shortly before Toy Story 3 was released in 2010, with Tom Hanks confirming in 2011 that Pixar was already exploring ideas for another sequel. The project was officially announced in November 2014. John Lasseter was initially set to direct after writing a treatment with Andrew Stanton, with Josh Cooley joining as co-director in March 2015.

A significant creative shift occurred in 2016 when Cooley replaced Lasseter as sole director and reconceived the story from the ground up. Screenwriter Stephany Folsom rewrote approximately 75% of the original script by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who departed due to what they described as "philosophical differences" with Pixar's creative direction. Voice recording sessions took place from September 2018 through January 2019.

The release date shifted multiple times during the extended development period. Originally scheduled for June 16, 2017, the film was first pushed to June 15, 2018, before Pixar reassigned that slot to Incredibles 2 and set the final release date as June 21, 2019. The additional development time allowed Cooley and his team to refine the story's exploration of Woody's purpose and identity beyond being Andy's toy.

Critical Reception

Toy Story 4 received critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 96% approval rating based on 457 reviews, with an average score of 8.3 out of 10. Metacritic assigned a score of 84 out of 100 from 57 critics, indicating universal acclaim. Audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore grade.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus summarized the film as "heartwarming, funny, and beautifully animated," noting that it "manages the unlikely feat of extending, and perhaps concluding, a practically perfect animated saga." Critics highlighted the story's emotional depth, animation quality, and vocal performances, with Tony Hale's portrayal of Forky earning particular praise as the film's comedic and thematic centerpiece.

Some critics felt the film did not quite reach the heights of its predecessors. Kyle Smith of the National Review called it "the weakest effort in the series," criticizing certain character choices and arguing that the film prioritized comedy over the thematic depth that defined Toy Story 3. The question of whether a fourth installment was necessary at all became a recurring point of discussion, though most reviewers concluded the film justified its existence.
