Production History

Planning for Dead Man's Chest commenced in June 2004, following the unexpected success of The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio decided to retroactively transform the first film into the beginning of a trilogy rather than create standalone sequels. The script remained unfinished by November 2004 as the writers resisted compromising their ambitious vision, and Disney executives threatened cancellation in January 2005 due to escalating costs and incomplete drafts. The studio ultimately reversed course and greenlit the project.

Gore Verbinski returned to direct with producer Jerry Bruckheimer overseeing a $225 million budget, making it the most expensive film ever produced at the time of its release. A seaworthy Black Pearl was constructed over the Sunset, a former Gulf of Mexico oil derrick service vessel, built in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. Principal photography ran from February 28 through September 2005 across locations including Palos Verdes, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, Grand Bahama Island, and Walt Disney Studios in Los Angeles. Production officially wrapped on February 7, 2006.

The production faced significant logistical challenges. The Dominican government proved unprepared for the 500-person crew occupying 90% of the island's roads. Weather conditions alternated between torrential rain and extreme heat. Hurricane Wilma damaged accessways and pumps in the Bahamas, though no personnel or ships were harmed. Stunt performer Tony Angelotti suffered severe internal bleeding during a "human yo-yo" stunt in July 2005.

Critical Reception

Dead Man's Chest received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 53% approval rating based on 229 reviews, with an average score of 6.00 out of 10. Metacritic assigned a score of 53 out of 100 from 37 critics, indicating mixed to average reviews. Audiences gave the film an A- CinemaScore grade.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus noted that "gone is Depp's unpredictability and much of the humor" that characterized the original film. A. O. Scott of The New York Times credited Verbinski's directorial gifts as comparable to Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, while Michael Booth of The Denver Post praised it as "two hours and twenty minutes of escapism." The realistic computer-generated Davy Jones character, strong action sequences, and Johnny Depp's continued eccentric performance drew particular praise.

Critics faulted the film for excessive length and complexity, a loss of originality compared to its predecessor, and an overly cartoonish tone. Mark Kermode of The Observer criticized the "lumpen direction" and "lousy writing," calling the runtime "interminable." Many reviewers felt the film served primarily as setup for the trilogy's conclusion rather than standing on its own.
