Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Production History

Universal announced the sequel in July 2015 with Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly returning as writers. The pair embarked on an eight-day road trip from Los Angeles to Vermont to develop the screenplay's core ideas. J.A. Bayona was hired as director in April 2016 after previously turning down the first Jurassic World due to time constraints. Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Kathleen Kennedy had been impressed by Bayona's 2012 film The Impossible, and Trevorrow specifically wanted him after seeing his 2007 horror film The Orphanage. The script drew inspiration from a rejected 2004 Jurassic Park IV draft featuring island escape followed by mainland mansion sequences, and Spielberg himself suggested the weaponized dinosaurs concept.

Principal photography ran from February 24 to July 8, 2017, split between the United Kingdom and Hawaii. The Lockwood mansion exterior was built at Hawley Common in Hampshire, with multi-floor interiors constructed on Pinewood Studios soundstages. The opening sequence was shot overnight at Hartland Park in Fleet, Hampshire using helicopters and rain machines. Production moved to Hawaii on June 13, where filming lasted over 25 days across locations including Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Gyrosphere riding scenes were staged, and Police Beach, where the Jurassic World Main Street set was rebuilt over a three-month period after being dismantled from its original Louisiana location.

The production featured five animatronic dinosaurs, more than any previous sequel in the franchise, due to the increased human-dinosaur interaction in the story. Neal Scanlan spent eight months at Pinewood Studios with approximately 35 crew members developing creature effects. Blue's operating table scene required up to 12 puppeteers hidden beneath the table. The film contained approximately 1,200 visual effects shots, with David Vickery and his ILM team consulting volcanologists for eruption accuracy. One scene used burning cat litter as a practical stand-in for lava on set.

Casting began in October 2016 with approximately 2,500 girls auditioning for the role of Maisie before Isabella Sermon won the part in her film debut. Jeff Goldblum was confirmed to reprise Ian Malcolm in April 2017 and shot his scenes in a single day at Pinewood Studios. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard received $8 million and $10 million respectively. The original rough cut ran approximately 2 hours 45 minutes before being trimmed to 2 hours 8 minutes. The film became the first in the Jurassic franchise shot digitally, using Arri Alexa 65 cameras exclusively and the first shot in CinemaScope (2.40:1 aspect ratio).

Critical Reception

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) received a mixed critical response, marking a significant drop from its predecessor. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 47% approval rating based on 430 reviews. Metacritic assigned a score of 51 out of 100 based on 59 reviews, indicating mixed or average reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus noted that the film "adds another set piece-packed entry to the blockbuster franchise, although genuinely thrilling moments are in increasingly short supply." Audiences were similarly divided, giving it a 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, though the CinemaScore was a more generous A-.

Critics who responded positively highlighted director J.A. Bayona's visual flair, particularly the gothic horror elements in the film's second half set inside a sprawling mansion. The opening sequence depicting the volcanic destruction of Isla Nublar was widely praised for its visual spectacle and emotional weight. Several reviewers also noted improved chemistry between Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard compared to the first film.

However, the majority of critics found the screenplay lacking. Common complaints included thin character development, predictable plot twists, and a tonal inconsistency between the outdoor adventure of the first half and the haunted-house thriller of the second. Many reviewers felt the franchise was running out of fresh ideas, with the auction subplot drawing particular criticism as implausible. The film's cliffhanger ending, which set up a premise of dinosaurs loose on the mainland, was met with equal parts intrigue and skepticism about where the series could go next.
