Jumanji: The Next Level Production History

Jumanji: The Next Level was greenlit at Sony Pictures after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle grossed $962 million worldwide in 2017 and 2018. Director Jake Kasdan, screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, and producer Matt Tolmach returned. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan reprised their avatar roles, with the picture introducing Danny DeVito as grandfather Eddie and Danny Glover as his estranged friend Milo, both swapped into the game as Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart's avatars for much of the running time.

Principal photography began in January 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, and continued through April 2019 with location work in Alberta, Hawaii, and New Mexico. The Alberta sequences provided the snowy mountain pass set pieces, while Hawaii and New Mexico stood in for the desert and oasis biomes. The all-in production cost reached approximately $125 million, modestly above the prior film.

Sony released the picture on December 13, 2019, with a holiday family campaign focused on Danny DeVito and Danny Glover's avatar swaps and the new desert and snow biomes. The opening weekend posted $59 million domestically, with sustained holiday legs, including a third weekend bump driven by Christmas school break attendance.

Critical Reception

Jumanji: The Next Level holds a 71 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 58. CinemaScore audiences awarded the film an A-, indicating strong audience satisfaction. Glenn Kenny at The New York Times wrote that the picture "finds new comedic life in the avatar swap structure, particularly in Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart playing Danny DeVito and Danny Glover." Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com awarded three stars and praised the chemistry between Johnson and Hart in their new performance registers. Owen Gleiberman at Variety described the film as "engineered with more skill than the wider sequel slate it sits within." Some critics noted that the swap concept began to thin out by the third act when characters returned to their original avatars. Industry observers credited the strong CinemaScore and sustained holiday legs with the picture's ability to gross more than 6.4 times its production budget worldwide, an unusually strong multiple for a $125 million franchise release.
