Is This Thing On? Production History

Bradley Cooper and Will Arnett developed Is This Thing On? as a long-running personal project over several years, with Cooper and Arnett trading drafts of the script and consulting with Mark Chappell, the British comedy writer behind Flight of the Conchords and The Lovely Bones. Cooper signed on to direct in early 2023 following the conclusion of Maestro's awards campaign.

Searchlight Pictures and Cooper's production banner Lea Pictures financed the picture in fall 2023 alongside Archery Pictures. Principal photography began in March 2024 in New York City, with the Comedy Cellar agreeing to host extensive practical filming during operating hours and post-show, including live performance sequences in front of working audiences. Cooper, Arnett, and Hill all spent time performing stand-up at the venue ahead of shooting to develop authentic stage rhythm.

Post-production ran through summer 2025, with Cooper editing alongside Maestro's Michelle Tesoro. The picture premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2025 to strong early reception. Subsequent screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival positioned the film for Searchlight's standard October-through-January platform release. The picture entered the 2026 awards conversation with several below-the-line and screenplay nominations, though it did not advance to the major Academy Award categories.
