Geostorm Production History

Geostorm was the directorial debut of producer Dean Devlin, the longtime collaborator of Roland Emmerich on Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla. Devlin and Paul Guyot wrote the screenplay around a high concept climate control satellite premise, and Skydance Media partnered with Warner Bros. Pictures and Devlin's Electric Entertainment to finance the picture.

Principal photography began in October 2014 on soundstages in New Orleans, Louisiana, with additional work in Dubai. The original 2015 release date was pushed when test screenings prompted Warner Bros. to mandate substantial reshoots in early 2017. Danny Cannon, of Gotham and CSI fame, directed the additional photography, with Jerry Bruckheimer hired to consult on the recut. The reshoots and additional visual effects work pushed the all-in cost to a reported $120 million.

The picture was finally released on October 20, 2017. The two year delay, public knowledge of the reshoots, and a crowded fall release window combined to suppress the opening, and Warner Bros. confirmed the film had been written down by the studio prior to release.

Critical Reception

Geostorm holds a 17 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 21, placing it among the more critically punished disaster films of the 2010s. CinemaScore audiences awarded the film a B-, indicating that paying genre audiences took it somewhat better than reviewers. Brian Truitt of USA Today gave the picture two and a half stars and called it "big, dumb fun." Glenn Kenny at RogerEbert.com awarded one and a half stars and noted that the script "reaches for Roland Emmerich and lands well short." Manohla Dargis of The New York Times described the film as "an incoherent piece of work whose only ambition is volume." Several critics pointed to the visible seams of the reshoots, particularly Andy Garcia's late additions as the US President. Industry post-mortems framed Geostorm as a cautionary example of an expensive original disaster film attempting to compete with a marketplace dominated by franchise titles. The picture went on to perform far more strongly internationally than domestically, with China alone contributing nearly $65 million of the worldwide total.
