Dune: Part Two Production History

Denis Villeneuve had planned a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel since February 2018, when he was confirmed as director. Legendary Pictures officially greenlit Part Two on October 26, 2021, following the commercial success of the first film. Villeneuve and producer Tanya Lapointe immediately flew to Budapest to begin pre-production.

Pre-shooting began on July 4, 2022, with the filming of the Brion tomb sequence in Italy. Principal photography ran from July 18 to December 12, 2022, across locations in Budapest, Italy, Jordan, and Abu Dhabi. The production shot entirely on Arri Alexa LF digital cameras. In a notable feat, the crew captured footage during the October 25, 2022 solar eclipse for use in an opening fight scene.

Austin Butler was cast as Feyd-Rautha without an audition and trained for four months to prepare for the role. Florence Pugh joined as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, and Anya Taylor-Joy made an uncredited cameo as Alia Atreides. The 2023 Hollywood labor disputes delayed the release from October 2023 to March 1, 2024, pushing it back by over four months.

Critical Reception

Dune: Part Two received widespread critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 92% approval rating from 466 critics with an average rating of 8.4 out of 10. The consensus calls it "visually thrilling and narratively epic," continuing Villeneuve's adaptation "in spectacular form." On Metacritic, it scored 79 out of 100 from 62 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews.

The film earned an A CinemaScore from audiences, improving on the first film's A-minus, with PostTrak reporting 94% positive and 80% saying they would definitely recommend it. Steven Spielberg called it "one of the most brilliant science fiction films I have ever seen," while Christopher Nolan compared the leap in quality to The Empire Strikes Back relative to the original Star Wars.

Some reviewers noted the film's handling of the source material's Middle Eastern and North African cultural influences, with concerns about insufficient MENA casting despite the production drawing heavily on regional cultural elements for its world-building and visual language.
