Doctor Strange Production History

The film rights to Doctor Strange passed through numerous studios over decades, including New World Pictures in 1986, Columbia Pictures from 1997 to 2000, and Dimension Films in 2001, before landing at Marvel Studios through Paramount Pictures in April 2005. Early pitches included versions by Guillermo del Toro and Neil Gaiman in 2007. Scott Derrickson was hired as director in June 2014 after presenting an elaborate 90-minute pitch that featured a 12-page astral plane sequence Marvel later purchased.

Benedict Cumberbatch was officially cast in December 2014, with Marvel adjusting the production schedule to accommodate his prior commitments. Early contenders for the role included Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, and Ryan Gosling. Principal photography began on November 4, 2015, starting in Nepal under the working title Checkmate, then moving to Longcross Studios in Surrey, England through March 2016, with final shoots wrapping in New York City on April 3, 2016.

The production shifted its setting from Tibet to Nepal to avoid potential censorship issues with the Chinese market, a decision co-writer C. Robert Cargill publicly acknowledged. The film's complex visual effects, particularly the reality-bending sequences in the Dark Dimension, required extensive post-production work and pushed the boundaries of what had been attempted in the MCU to that point.

Critical Reception

Doctor Strange earned an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus praising the film for "artfully balancing its outre source material against the blockbuster constraints of the MCU, delivering a thoroughly entertaining superhero origin story in the bargain." The audience score was 86%. On Metacritic, the film scored 72 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.

Critics widely praised the visual effects and the kaleidoscopic, mind-bending action sequences as some of the most inventive in the MCU. Cumberbatch's performance received strong notices, with reviewers highlighting his ability to balance the character's arrogance with vulnerability. The film earned an A CinemaScore from audiences.

The most common criticism was that the film followed a familiar MCU origin story formula despite its visual ambition. Some reviewers also raised concerns about the casting of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, a role traditionally depicted as an Asian character in the comics.
