What Is the Budget of Deadpool & Wolverine?

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), directed by Shawn Levy for Marvel Studios and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, cost $533,700,000 to produce before incentives and $429,000,000 after them, according to the UK accounts of Richmond Street Productions UK, the Disney subsidiary that made the film, as reported by Forbes in November 2025. The difference is $104,700,000 in UK tax credits and reimbursements earned by shooting at Pinewood Studios in England. This page uses the gross $533,700,000 as the production budget, because it is the full cost of making the film; the net $429,000,000 is what Disney was out of pocket once the UK credits came back.

The $200,000,000 figure still quoted for the film, and still listed by The Numbers, comes from trade reporting at release. Variety's opening-weekend preview on July 23, 2024, reported that Disney spent about $200,000,000 to produce the film and roughly $100,000,000 to promote it, and Deadline used the same production figure in its April 2025 profit analysis. It was an estimate published before any accounts were filed, and the gross filed cost is more than two and a half times larger (about twice as much on a net basis); Box Office Mojo has since updated its listing to $537,000,000, in line with the gross filing. Forbes pointed to the 2023 strikes as a possible reason for the gap. The SAG-AFTRA strike halted filming on July 14, 2023, with 35 of 70 planned shooting days complete, and the production sat idle for four months before cameras rolled again in late November. The filed accounts run through October 31, 2024, three months after release, so they capture the full cost of the shutdown, the restart and the post-production push to hold the July 26 date.

Forbes ranked the film among the ten most expensive ever made. It is also an unusual film: an R-rated comedy built on a character whose films started as a scrappy, lower-budget Fox franchise, now carrying the cost structure of a full Marvel Cinematic Universe event film.

• Strike Shutdown and Restart: The SAG-AFTRA strike stopped production on July 14, 2023, halfway through a 70-day shoot. Filming resumed by November 23 and wrapped on January 24, 2024. The filings state that final costs exceeded the production budget, and Forbes suggested that was perhaps a result of the strike disruption.

Those payments sit outside the production cost, but they show the scale of the talent deals on a film where Reynolds is also a credited writer and producer.
• Visual Effects Across Seven Vendors: Visual effects supervisor Swen Gillberg split the work between Industrial Light & Magic, Framestore, Wētā FX, Rising Sun Pictures, Base FX, Barnstorm VFX and Raynault VFX. ILM worked on 614 shots, Wētā FX on about 630, and Framestore delivered 420 final shots.

Deadpool & Wolverine opened in North America on July 26, 2024, with $211,435,291, the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film and now the seventh-biggest domestic opening of all time, after a $96,000,000 first day that included $38,500,000 from Thursday previews. The global opening reached $444,600,000. The film went on to earn $636,745,858 domestically and $701,327,787 internationally for $1,338,073,645 worldwide, passing Joker as the highest-grossing R-rated film in 23 days, a record it held until The Odyssey (2026). It finished as the second-highest-grossing film of 2024 behind Inside Out 2 (2024).

Disney does not publish its marketing spend. Deadline's 2024 Most Valuable Blockbuster analysis estimated global prints and advertising at about $160,000,000, the figure used below, while Forbes, citing That Park Place, noted that an aggressive worldwide rollout like this one can cost more than $200,000,000. Added to the $533,700,000 gross production cost, that gives a total estimated investment of about $693,700,000.

The gross overstates what Disney kept. Theaters keep roughly half of ticket sales, and on a 50-50 split Forbes estimated Disney's share of the worldwide total at about $670,000,000, a box office profit of roughly $241,000,000 against the net production cost before any marketing. Deadline's fuller accounting, which adds home entertainment and television and streaming revenue and subtracts participations, residuals and overhead, put Disney's profit at $400,000,000 and ranked the film third on its list of 2024's most valuable blockbusters. That model used the earlier $200,000,000 production cost; swapping in the filed net cost would cut its profit estimate by about $229,000,000, leaving the film profitable on Deadline's other assumptions. Measured on the net cost instead of the gross, the total investment falls to about $589,000,000 and the return rises to about 127%. The worldwide split was nearly even, with 47.6% of the gross coming from North America, and the film reached Disney+ on November 12, 2024.

At 93%, "Deadpool & Wolverine" earned roughly $1.93 for every $1 invested.

Deadpool & Wolverine Production History

Development of a third Deadpool film began at 20th Century Fox by November 2016, but Disney's acquisition of Fox, announced in December 2017 and completed in March 2019, put the project on hold. Disney chief executive Bob Iger said the character could remain R-rated under Disney as long as audiences knew what was coming, and Reynolds was meeting with Marvel Studios by October 2019. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin were hired to write in November 2020.

Shawn Levy, who had directed Reynolds in Free Guy (2021) and The Adam Project (2022), was confirmed as director in March 2022, with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning for rewrites. The story clicked when Hugh Jackman, who had retired Wolverine with Logan (2017), told Reynolds in August 2022 that he wanted to come back. The release date moved from September 6, 2024, to November 8, then forward to May 3, before the strike settled it on July 26, 2024.

Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid edited the film, and a revised ending was shot in a day and a half of reshoots. Composer Rob Simonsen was hired by mid-July 2023. The world premiere was held on July 22, 2024, at the David H. Koch Theater in New York City, four days before release, and the Super Bowl trailer that opened the campaign drew 365 million views in 24 hours, a record for a trailer in that window.

Awards and Recognition

Deadpool & Wolverine competed mainly in comedy, genre and craft categories. It won Best Comedy at the 30th Critics' Choice Awards, in a tie with A Real Pain (2024), and was nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. At the Saturn Awards it won Best Action/Adventure Film, Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Jackman and Best Editing for Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid. The Critics' Choice Super Awards named it Best Superhero Movie and gave Jackman Best Actor in a Superhero Movie.

Craft and music recognition followed. The film earned a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble and a Visual Effects Society nomination, and it won Hollywood Music in Media Awards for Music Supervision (Dave Jordan) and Soundtrack Album. Its "Taken" teaser swept Best Teaser, Summer 2024 Blockbuster Trailer and Best of Show at the Golden Trailer Awards.

Critical Reception

Reviews split between praise for the two leads and fatigue with the jokes, while audiences were close to unanimous. Deadpool & Wolverine holds 77% on Rotten Tomatoes from 421 reviews, with an average rating of 6.9 out of 10, and 56 out of 100 on Metacritic from 58 critics, indicating mixed or average reviews. Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore, matching both earlier Deadpool films, a 96% positive PostTrak score and a 94% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, whose critics consensus calls it "an irreverent romp with a surprising soft spot for a bygone era of superhero movies."

Pete Hammond of Deadline wrote that the pairing works "beyond your wildest screen-team dreams" and called it Jackman's best turn as Wolverine. Empire's Olly Richards said Jackman delivers "a character arc that's genuinely moving." Variety's Peter Debruge was more measured, calling the film an "irreverent send-off" to Fox's Marvel era while finding Levy stronger at comedy than action.

The detractors were blunt. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter found it "messy and overstuffed," NPR's Justin Chang called it a "self-cannibalizing slog," and Entertainment Weekly's Jordan Hoffman gave it a C- as "too repetitive, too immature, and too irritating to enjoy." The audience verdict carried the box office regardless.
