Frequently Asked Questions

How much did Chaos Walking (2021) cost to make?

Chaos Walking was produced on a reported budget of approximately $100,000,000, with industry estimates placing the figure as high as $125,000,000 once extensive reshoots are included. The film was financed by Lionsgate and Allison Shearmur Productions, adapted from Patrick Ness's young-adult novel The Knife of Never Letting Go.

How much did Chaos Walking earn at the box office?

The film grossed $13,148,517 domestically and $12,939,000 internationally, for a worldwide total of $26,087,663. Against a $100,000,000-plus production budget, it returned approximately $0.26 in worldwide gross for every $1 invested and is one of the most decisive box office bombs of the post-pandemic era.

Why was Chaos Walking delayed for years before release?

Principal photography wrapped in November 2017 but the film was not released until March 2021. Test screenings in 2018 returned scores so poor that Lionsgate considered shelving the film entirely. Doug Liman returned for extensive reshoots in 2019, and the COVID-19 pandemic then delayed the theatrical release further. The total gap between wrap and release was approximately 40 months, longer than the Star Wars prequel gaps.

Who directed Chaos Walking?

Doug Liman directed the film. Liman is best known for The Bourne Identity (2002), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Chaos Walking is widely considered the weakest commercial and critical entry in his filmography.

Who starred in Chaos Walking?

Tom Holland played Todd Hewitt, the young farmer at the center of the story. Daisy Ridley played Viola Eade, the crash-landed colonist. The supporting cast included Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Nick Jonas, Cynthia Erivo, and David Oyelowo.

Where was Chaos Walking filmed?

Principal photography took place in Montreal, Quebec and Iceland in 2017, with reshoots conducted in Atlanta, Georgia in 2019. The Iceland location work covered the planet's harsh outdoor sequences, while the Montreal and Atlanta portions handled the New World colony settings. Combined production tax credits across Quebec and Georgia offset approximately 25 to 30 percent of qualifying spend.

What did critics think of Chaos Walking?

The film holds a 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 37 Metacritic score. Audiences gave it a B CinemaScore. Critics broadly described the film as visually expensive but narratively confused, with the central conceit of Noise (men's thoughts being audible) struggling to translate cleanly to the screen. The Hollywood Reporter's John DeFore called it "a misfire that never finds its rhythm."

Why is the Noise concept difficult to film?

In Patrick Ness's novels, the Noise is the phenomenon by which men's thoughts are involuntarily broadcast aloud and visualized. The film attempts to render this through layered audio whispers and translucent visual graphics surrounding Tom Holland's head. Critics and viewers alike found the execution distracting rather than immersive, contributing to the film's pacing and tonal problems.

Did Chaos Walking win any awards?

The film received no major industry award nominations. It avoided Razzie attention despite its commercial failure, likely because its low cultural visibility kept it out of the year's most-discussed flops conversation. The film effectively ended studio interest in further Patrick Ness adaptations.

How does Chaos Walking compare to other YA adaptations?

Chaos Walking's $26,087,663 worldwide gross was significantly below comparable YA fantasy releases. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013) grossed $90,565,421 against a $60,000,000 budget. Mortal Engines (2018) grossed $83,690,855 against a $100,000,000 budget. Both flops still outperformed Chaos Walking by wide margins, marking its result as a generational low for the subgenre.
